Lantern Festivals in Greater Vancouver

This is a compendium, so far of the lantern festivals in Vancouver. Others will be added as I attend them.

North Delta Luminary

Held at Sunstone Park, the North Delta Luminary Festival attracts over 1000 attendees to an evening of activities for youth between 6PM and 9PM, a luminary parade around the park and music. Kids are given a free lantern to decorate, face painting as well as other activities, such as Djembe drumming.

How many people attend?

1000+. There’s not a lot of room in the park for many more.

Do they have a lot of artistic displays?

There are a lot of purchased lanterns setup by the organizers, a few artistic exhibits and artist as well as a light wall in which to place artwork created by youth during the festival.

Are there a lot of handmade lantern displays?

There are very few.

Do the community bring their own lanterns or have the ability to purchase LED items on site?

Yes. Lot of people bring lanterns or other lighting to the festival/parade.

Conclusion

This is an event that brings the community to Sunstone and to display some flash and glitter with the Mayor of Delta.

 

Still Moon

Starting at Slocan Park station, there is an afternoon series of activities. At 7PM, attendees walk through a green-way and into the Renfrew ravine where they are treated to a wide range of handmade lanterns and displays. Afterwards, they gather at the top of the park for music and fireworks until 9:15PM.

They hold youth as well as adult oriented lantern workshops prior to the event.

Do they have a lot of artistic displays?

Yes, there’s lot of artistic displays that are put on by artists. The organisers rely on the artists for the displays, and just focus on stage lighting for the music and fireworks.

Are there a lot of handmade lantern displays?

Yes, lots of lantern displays, and they look awesome in the ravine.

Do the community bring their own lanterns or have the ability to purchase LED items on site?

No LED items available for purchase at the festival, however some attendees bring their own lanterns.

 Conclusion

This is a well established event for almost 15 years and it is THE event for lantern artists.

 

Surrey Garden

Held at Bear Creek Park, attendees are invited to walk through the artistically lit gardens between 6PM and 9PM. There are a few artists that also display their handmade works at the Still Moon festival, but it’s mostly stage lighting and effects. Kids are provided with face painting as well as a free lantern.

They hold youth oriented lantern workshops prior to the event.

There are about 3 or 4 handmade lantern displays. All of them are at the Still Moon festival as well.

LED lanterns are available on site, however very few lanterns are brought.

This is an excellent event to bring the community to the gardens at Bear Creek Park.
